Retirement is a time to relax and enjoy the fruits of your labor. But before you can kick back and enjoy your golden years, it’s important to take care of some important matters, like enrolling in Medicare.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, certain people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Medicare consists of four parts:

• Part A: Hospital insurance
• Part B: Medical insurance
• Part C: Medicare Advantage
• Part D: Prescription drug coverage

Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care. Part B covers doctor visits, preventive care, diagnostic tests, and other medical services. Part C is a private health insurance plan that combines Parts A and B. Part D covers prescription drugs.

There are many different Medicare plans to choose from, so it’s important to compare plans and find one that fits your needs and budget. You can enroll in Medicare during the Medicare Open Enrollment Period (October 15 – December 7) each year. You can also enroll in a plan outside of Open Enrollment if you have a qualifying event, such as moving to a new area, losing your job, or becoming eligible for Extra Help.
