Medicare is a health insurance program in the United States that provides coverage to people who are 65 years old or older, people under 65 with certain disabilities, and people of all ages with End-Stage Renal Disease. To be eligible for Medicare, you or your spouse must have worked in Medicare-covered employment for at least 10 years, and you must be a citizen or permanent resident of the United States. However, if you are under 65, you may also qualify for coverage if you have a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease.
If you meet the eligibility criteria for Medicare, you can get Part A at age 65 without having to pay premiums if you already receive retirement benefits from Social Security or the Railroad Retirement Board, are eligible to receive Social Security or Railroad benefits but have not yet filed for them, or had Medicare-covered government employment. If you are under 65, you can get Part A without having to pay premiums if you have received Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefit for 24 months or are a kidney dialysis or kidney transplant patient.
While Part A is usually free, most people pay a monthly premium for Part B. Part B covers doctors’ services and outpatient care, as well as some other medical services that Part A doesn’t cover, such as the services of physical and occupational therapists and some home health care. You can choose to enroll in a Medicare Prescription Drug Coverage plan, which is insurance provided by private companies to help lower prescription drug costs and protect against higher costs in the future. Beneficiaries choose the drug plan and pay a monthly premium, and if they don’t enroll when they are first eligible, they may have to pay a penalty if they choose to join later.
Having Medicare and a Medicare Supplement plan can provide additional coverage for medical expenses that may not be covered by Medicare alone, such as deductibles, copays, and coinsurance. This can help ensure that you are financially protected against unexpected medical costs.
