Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Medicare has four parts:
- Part A: Hospital Insurance. This part covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Part B: Medical Insurance. This part covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans. These are private health plans that offer all of the benefits of Part A and Part B, plus some extra benefits.
- Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage. This part helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.
Medicare is not free. You will have to pay monthly premiums for Parts A and B, and you may also have to pay copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs.
There are a few different ways to get Medicare coverage. You can sign up for Original Medicare, which is the traditional Medicare program. You can also choose to get a Medicare Advantage Plan, which is a private health plan that offers all of the benefits of Original Medicare, plus some extra benefits.
If you have low income, you may be eligible for help paying for your Medicare premiums and other costs. There are a number of different programs that can help, including Medicaid, Medicare Savings Programs, and the Extra Help program.
To learn more about Medicare, you can visit the Medicare website or call the Medicare helpline at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227).
Here are some additional details about Medicare:
- Eligibility: You are eligible for Medicare if you are 65 or older, you have certain disabilities, or you have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).
- Enrollment: You can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is the seven-month period that begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after your birthday. You can also sign up for Medicare during the General Enrollment Period (GEP), which runs from January 1 to March 31 each year.
- Premiums: The monthly premiums for Part A and Part B depend on your income. If you have low income, you may be eligible for help paying for your premiums.
- Costs: In addition to your premiums, you may also have to pay copays, deductibles, and other out-of-pocket costs for Medicare-covered services.
- Benefits: Medicare covers a wide range of health care services, including inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Medicare Advantage Plans: Medicare Advantage Plans are private health plans that offer all of the benefits of Part A and Part B, plus some extra benefits. Medicare Advantage Plans may also offer additional benefits, such as dental, vision, and hearing coverage.
- Part D: Part D helps cover the cost of prescription drugs. You can choose a stand-alone Part D plan or a Medicare Advantage Plan that includes prescription drug coverage.
