Medigap vs. Medicare Advantage

When you enroll in Medicare, you may be wondering which type of coverage is right for you. There are two main options: Medigap and Medicare Advantage.

Medigap

Medigap is private health insurance that you can purchase to supplement your Original Medicare coverage. It helps pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare doesn’t cover, such as copayments, coinsurance, and deductibles.

There are 10 standardized Medigap plans available, each with its own set of benefits. You can choose the plan that best meets your needs and budget.

Medigap plans are sold by private insurance companies, and you can purchase them through your state’s health insurance marketplace or directly from an insurance company.

Medicare Advantage

Medicare Advantage is a type of Medicare health plan offered by private companies. These plans typically cover all of your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, as well as some additional benefits, such as prescription drug coverage, dental care, and vision care.

Medicare Advantage plans are not standardized, so the benefits and costs of each plan can vary. You can compare plans in your area using the Medicare Plan Finder tool on the Medicare website.

Medicare Advantage plans are offered through private companies, and you can enroll in a plan through your state’s health insurance marketplace or directly from the insurance company.

Which is right for you?

The best way to decide which type of Medicare coverage is right for you is to compare your options and choose the plan that best meets your needs and budget.

If you want to have the most flexibility in choosing your doctors and hospitals, then Original Medicare with a Medigap plan may be a good option for you.

If you prefer a plan with all-in-one coverage and don’t mind having to use doctors and hospitals in the plan’s network, then a Medicare Advantage plan may be a good option for you.

It’s important to note that you can’t have both Original Medicare and a Medicare Advantage plan at the same time. If you switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, you can’t go back to Original Medicare unless you have a qualifying event, such as moving out of the plan’s service area or losing your Medicare Advantage coverage.

If you’re not sure which type of Medicare coverage is right for you, you can talk to an Ashford Insurance licensed insurance agent.
