What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 years of age or older, certain people under 65 who have disabilities, and people with end-stage renal disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant). Medicare is divided into four parts:

  • Part A: Hospital insurance
  • Part B: Medical insurance
  • Part C: Medicare Advantage
  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage

Part A covers inpatient hospital care, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care services. You do not pay a monthly premium for Part A if you are entitled to Social Security benefits or have worked long enough in Medicare-covered employment. However, you may have to pay a deductible and coinsurance for some services.

Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, preventive care, and some other services. You pay a monthly premium for Part B, and you may also have to pay a deductible and coinsurance for some services.

Part C is also known as Medicare Advantage. It is a type of private health insurance that offers all of the benefits of Part A and Part B, plus additional benefits like dental, vision, and hearing coverage. You pay a monthly premium for Part C, and you may also have to pay a deductible and coinsurance for some services.

Part D covers prescription drugs. You pay a monthly premium for Part D, and you may also have to pay a deductible and coinsurance for some drugs.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you will need to choose a plan for each part of Medicare. You can choose to get all four parts of Medicare through Original Medicare, or you can choose to get Part A and Part B through Original Medicare and Part C or Part D through a private health insurance company.

There are many factors to consider when choosing a Medicare plan, such as your health needs, your budget, and your preferences. You can learn more about Medicare plans and how to choose the right plan for you by visiting the Medicare website or by talking to a Medicare counselor.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Medicare:

  • Medicare does not cover all medical expenses. You may still have to pay for some services, such as copays, deductibles, and premiums.
  • Medicare does not cover long-term care, such as nursing home care.
  • Medicare is not the only health insurance option available to you. You may also be eligible for Medicaid, private health insurance, or a combination of these plans.
