Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans (MAPDs)

MAPDs are a type of Medicare health plan that combines Original Medicare (Parts A and B) with prescription drug coverage (Part D). MAPDs are offered by private insurance companies that have been approved by Medicare.

Benefits of MAPDs

MAPDs offer a variety of benefits, including:

  • Prescription drug coverage: MAPDs typically include prescription drug coverage, which can help you save money on your medications.
  • Lower out-of-pocket costs: MAPDs typically have lower out-of-pocket costs than Original Medicare, such as lower copays and deductibles.
  • Extra benefits: Some MAPDs offer extra benefits, such as dental, vision, or hearing coverage.

Eligibility for MAPDs

To be eligible for a MAPD, you must:

  • Be enrolled in Original Medicare: You must be enrolled in both Medicare Parts A and B.
  • Live in the plan’s service area: You must live in the service area of the MAPD plan you want to join.
  • Not have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD): People with ESRD are generally not eligible for MAPDs.

How to enroll in a MAPD

You can enroll in a MAPD during the following enrollment periods:

  • Initial enrollment period: This is the period that begins three months before your 65th birthday and ends three months after your birthday.
  • Medicare Advantage open enrollment period: This is a seven-month period that begins on October 15th and ends on December 7th each year.
  • Special enrollment period: You may qualify for a special enrollment period if you have certain life events, such as moving, losing your job, or getting married.

To enroll in a MAPD, you can:

  • Contact the plan directly: You can contact the MAPD plan you want to join directly to enroll.
  • Use the Medicare website: You can use the Medicare website to compare MAPD plans and enroll in a plan.
  • Call the Medicare helpline: You can call the Medicare helpline at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to get help with enrolling in a MAPD.

Choosing a MAPD

When choosing a MAPD, it is important to consider the following factors:

  • Your prescription drug needs: Make sure the plan covers the medications you need.
  • Your budget: Consider the plan’s premiums, copays, and deductibles.
  • Your health needs: Some plans offer extra benefits, such as dental, vision, or hearing coverage.
  • Your lifestyle: Make sure the plan has a network of doctors and hospitals that are convenient for you.

Remember, plan benefits can change from year to year. Make sure you understand how a plan works before you join.
