Learn about Medicare parts, coverage, and how to enroll.

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people age 65 and older, people with certain disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). It is funded by the U.S. government and provides health insurance to millions of Americans.

Medicare has four parts:

  • Part A: Hospital insurance. This part covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Part B: Medical insurance. This part covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
  • Part C: Medicare Advantage plans. These are private health insurance plans that offer all the benefits of Part A and Part B, plus additional benefits like prescription drug coverage.
  • Part D: Prescription drug coverage. This part helps cover the cost of prescription drugs.

You can enroll in Medicare at age 65 if you are already receiving Social Security benefits. If you are not receiving Social Security benefits, you can enroll in Medicare three months before your 65th birthday.

There are several ways to enroll in Medicare:

  • Online: You can enroll online at www.medicare.gov.
  • By phone: You can call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) to enroll over the phone.
  • In person: You can enroll in person at your local Social Security office.

Once you are enrolled in Medicare, you will need to choose a plan for each part of Medicare. For Part A and Part B, you can choose to stay in Original Medicare or to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan. For Part D, you will need to choose a prescription drug plan.

Medicare can be a complex program, but it can provide valuable health insurance coverage for people who are eligible. If you are approaching age 65 or if you have a disability that qualifies you for Medicare, it is important to learn about your options and to enroll in Medicare as soon as you are eligible.
