Who is Eligible for Medicare?

Medicare eligibility begins for most people at the age of 65, however, individuals who have been receiving Social Security disability benefits for at least 24 months are also eligible.  There are also some other criteria that allow you to be eligible to receive Medicare benefits.

If you are under 65, you can still qualify based on the following criteria:

  • You are a US citizen or a permanent resident and have lived in the United States continuously for at least five years.
  • You are permanently disabled, and you have been receiving Social Security disability income benefits for 24 months.
  • You have end-stage renal disease.
  • You have Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Who is eligible for Medicare Part A?

You are eligible for Medicare Part A coverage at no cost at age 65 if you or your spouse have worked in the United States for at least 10 years. If you have not worked for 10 years, you can still purchase. You will be automatically enrolled in Part A when you turn 65 if you have already enrolled in Social Security benefits. Expect to receive your Medicare card in the mail 4-6 weeks before you turn 65.

Who is eligible for Medicare Part B?

The same eligibility requirements apply to Medicare Part B coverage as they do for Part A. However, one significant difference is that there is a monthly premium. Pay close attention to enrollment dates so you are not hit with a late fee.

Who is eligible for Medicare Part C?

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is available if you are enrolled in both Parts A and B and live within the plan’s area.

Who is eligible for Medicare Part D?

Medicare Part D, also known as a drug plan, is available if you are enrolled in both Parts A and B and live within the plan’s area.
