Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people 65 and older, people with certain disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant). Medicare has four parts:
- Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
- Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private health insurance plan that can include all of Part A and Part B benefits, as well as prescription drug coverage.
- Part D covers prescription drugs.
Medicare is a vital source of health insurance for millions of Americans, but it can still be expensive. There are a number of insurance plans available to help mitigate the costs of Medicare, including:
- Medigap plans are private insurance plans that can help pay for Medicare’s out-of-pocket costs, such as copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.
- Medicare Advantage Prescription Drug Plans are Medicare Advantage plans that include prescription drug coverage.
- Dual eligible plans are Medicare and Medicaid plans for people who qualify for both programs.
The best way to find out what type of insurance is right for you is to talk to a Medicare specialist. They can help you compare plans and choose the one that best meets your needs.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Medicare:
- Enrollment: You can sign up for Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which is the 7-month period that begins 3 months before your 65th birthday, includes the month of your birthday, and ends 3 months after your birthday. If you miss your IEP, you may still be able to sign up for Medicare, but you may have to pay a late enrollment penalty.
- Cost: Medicare premiums and cost-sharing vary depending on your income and other factors. You can use the Medicare Plan Finder to estimate your costs.
- Medicare coverage: Medicare does not cover all health care costs. You may still have to pay for some things out-of-pocket, such as copays, deductibles, and coinsurance.
