Medicare: What It Is and Why It’s Important to Enroll

Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people aged 65 and older, as well as people with certain disabilities. It is the United States’ largest health insurance program, with over 60 million beneficiaries.

Medicare provides coverage for a wide range of medical services, including hospital stays, doctor visits, preventive care, and prescription drugs. It also helps pay for long-term care services, such as nursing home care and home health care.

Medicare is important to enroll in because it can help you pay for the cost of healthcare. Without Medicare, you may have to pay for all of your medical expenses out of pocket, which can be very expensive. Medicare can also help you get the care you need when you need it.

There are two parts to Medicare: Part A and Part B.

  • Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility stays, hospice care, and some home health care.
  • Part B covers doctor visits, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.

You are automatically enrolled in Part A if you have worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters (10 years). You can also purchase Part A if you have not worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 40 quarters.

You must enroll in Part B, unless you are covered by a group health plan through your employer or union.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you can enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year. You can also enroll during the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period, which runs from January 1 to February 14 each year. If you are already enrolled in Medicare and you want to change plans, you can do so during the AEP or the Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period.

If you do not have any other health insurance coverage, you may be eligible for Extra Help, which is a program that helps pay for Medicare costs. To find out if you are eligible for Extra Help, you can contact your State Health Insurance Assistance Program (SHIP) or the Social Security Administration.
