Medicare Advantage is a type of health plan offered by private insurance companies that contract with Medicare. These plans, also known as Part C, provide the same core coverage as Original Medicare. However, they often include additional benefits such as vision, dental, and hearing services. In many cases, Medicare Advantage plans also cover prescription drugs (Part D).

You can choose to enroll in a Medicare Advantage plan after you’ve signed up for Original Medicare.

Types of Medicare Advantage Plans

There are several types of Medicare Advantage plans available:

  • Health Maintenance Organizations (HMOs): These plans typically have lower premiums but often require you to choose providers from a specific network and get referrals to see specialists.
  • Preferred Provider Organizations (PPOs): PPOs generally have higher premiums than HMOs, but they offer more flexibility. You can see out-of-network providers and specialists without referrals, although you’ll usually pay more.
  • Special Needs Plans (SNPs): Designed for individuals with specific health conditions like diabetes or heart disease, SNPs require you to use in-network providers and work closely with a primary care physician or care coordinator.
  • Private Fee-for-Service (PFFS) Plans: These plans determine how much to pay medical providers and what you’ll owe for care. You don’t need a referral to see specialists.
  • Medicare Savings Accounts (MSAs): An MSA combines a savings account with a high-deductible health plan. You receive funds to use for medical expenses before meeting your deductible.
