What Is a Medicare Plan N?

Medicare Plan N is a supplemental insurance plan that can help you pay for costs not covered by Original Medicare, such as copays, deductibles, and excess charges. It is similar to Plan G, but it does not cover the Part B deductible or excess charges. Plan N also has a copay of up to $20 for doctor visits and $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in hospitalization.

Medicare Plan N is one of 10 standardized Medigap plans available in Texas. Each plan has the same basic benefits, regardless of the insurance company that sells it. The only difference between plans is the cost.

You can only have one Medigap plan at a time. If you decide to switch plans, you must do so during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which is a six-month period that begins when you are first eligible for Medicare. After the Open Enrollment Period, insurance companies can charge you more for coverage if you have certain health conditions.

If you are eligible for Medicare, you should talk to a licensed insurance agent to compare Medigap plans and find the one that best meets your needs.

Here are some additional things to keep in mind about Medicare Plan N:

  • You are responsible for paying the Part B deductible and excess charges.
  • You may have a copay of up to $20 for doctor visits and $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in hospitalization.
  • You can only have one Medigap plan at a time.
  • You must switch plans during the Medigap Open Enrollment Period unless you have a qualifying event.
