Fort Worth ATV and Off-Road Vehicle Insurance
Ashford Insurance helps ATV and off-road vehicle owners in Fort Worth and Grapevine review insurance questions from its Hurst, Texas office. Coverage depends on the vehicle, where it is operated, who uses it, and the policy language. This general overview is not a coverage guarantee. Check with your insurer before relying on a homeowners or auto policy to protect an ATV, dirt bike, or other off-road vehicle.
Do not assume a home policy is enough
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says most homeowners policies provide limited coverage for golf carts and off-road vehicles, especially when they leave the owner’s property or are driven on streets. You may be able to add coverage to a homeowners or auto policy, or buy a separate policy for the vehicle. The right option depends on your circumstances and insurer. Ask specifically about liability for injuries or property damage, physical damage to the ATV, deductibles, limits, equipment or modifications, and whether coverage follows the vehicle to trails or other properties.
If you use a vehicle on a leased property or facility, do not assume the property owner’s insurance protects you or your ATV. TDI cautions that a facility’s policy may not cover an ATV used beyond the premises for which it was intended. Read the applicable contract and ask the facility and your insurer about the exact use. Before lending the vehicle, review who is covered and any restrictions on other riders.
Describe the way you ride
Tell the insurer whether the ATV is used on private land, trails, a hunting lease, or public roads, and whether it is modified or used by multiple household members. Ask what uses are excluded and whether you need a separate policy or endorsement. TDI distinguishes ATVs and other vehicles that are not permitted on public roads from vehicles subject to Texas road-use insurance requirements. Do not infer that a road-use rule guarantees coverage for off-road use, or vice versa. Ask for written confirmation of important details.
