Fort Worth boat and watercraft insurance
If you keep or use a boat around Fort Worth, check what protects the boat, its passengers, and other people before heading onto the water. Ashford Insurance serves Fort Worth from its Hurst office. Coverage depends on the vessel, its use, and the actual policy; this guide is not a promise of coverage.
Start with the homeowners policy, then check the gaps
The Texas Department of Insurance (TDI) says most homeowners policies cover boat damage only up to a limited dollar amount and do not provide boat liability coverage. A separate boat policy may be needed for a more expensive boat, medical payments, or damage or injuries to others. Check your declarations page rather than assuming that the boat is covered because it is stored at home.
Ask the insurer whether the policy covers the hull, motor, trailer, equipment, and personal property aboard the boat, and under what conditions. Compare limits and deductibles for damage, theft, and liability. Do not assume that every policy includes on-water towing, wreck removal, or protection for a borrowed or rented vessel; ask whether those protections are available and what restrictions apply.
Understand how a loss would be valued
TDI describes boat policies based on replacement cost, actual cash value, or an agreed amount. Actual cash value accounts for depreciation; an agreed-amount policy uses a stated value, subject to its terms. Ask your agent to show you how a covered total loss would be settled, which equipment is included, and whether the deductible differs by type of loss.
Tell the insurer where the boat is kept, what waters you use, and whether others may operate it. TDI notes that policies can include a layup provision for months when the boat is not used, limits on ocean use, and restrictions on underage operators. Confirm any navigation limits, storage conditions, and permitted drivers in writing before a trip.
