INSURANCE GUIDANCE

Helping Your Parents Enroll in Medicare

Helping a parent enroll in Medicare often means organizing deadlines, documents, and coverage choices without making the decision for them. Start by identifying whether the person is already receiving Social Security or Railroad Retirement Board benefits.

Automatic enrollment is not universal

Some people are automatically enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B when they are already receiving certain benefits. Others must actively enroll through Social Security. Do not assume a Medicare card will arrive automatically.

Review the major choices

Original Medicare includes Part A and Part B. A person with Original Medicare can add Part D prescription drug coverage and may consider Medigap. Medicare Advantage is another option offered by private insurers and may include Part D and extra benefits, but plan networks, costs, and rules vary.

Make the conversation easier

  • List current doctors, prescriptions, pharmacies, and planned care.
  • Gather employer, retiree, union, or Veterans coverage information.
  • Check the Initial Enrollment Period and any Special Enrollment Period.
  • Use Medicare.gov to compare available plans and costs.
  • Keep copies of enrollment confirmations and plan documents.
