Is Medigap Plan N Right for You? A Simple Guide

Medigap Plan N is a Medicare Supplement policy for people enrolled in Original Medicare. Medigap plans help pay some costs that Original Medicare leaves behind, but they do not replace Medicare Part A and Part B.

What Plan N covers

Plan N covers many standardized Medigap benefits, including Part A coinsurance and hospital costs after Original Medicare benefits are used. It also covers Part B coinsurance, subject to Plan N’s rules.

What you may still pay

Plan N can require a copayment of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for emergency room visits that do not result in an inpatient admission. Plan N also does not cover Part B excess charges. Ask whether your providers accept Medicare assignment.

Plan N does not cover prescription drugs, routine dental care, routine vision care, or long-term care. Those needs require separate coverage or out-of-pocket planning.

How to compare it

  • Compare premiums from available insurers in your area.
  • Ask how the insurer prices premiums and how rates can change.
  • Confirm your doctors accept Medicare and understand excess-charge rules.
  • Review enrollment timing and whether medical underwriting may apply.

Plan benefits are standardized in most states, but premiums and enrollment rules vary. Compare current benefits at Medicare.gov. This is educational information, not a plan recommendation.
