Medicare Insurance
Medicare is a federal health insurance program for people who are 65 or older, certain younger people with disabilities, and people with End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or a transplant). Medicare has two parts:
- Part A covers inpatient hospital stays, skilled nursing facility care, hospice care, and some home health care.
- Part B covers certain doctor’s services, outpatient care, medical supplies, and preventive services.
You can get Medicare Part A and Part B by paying a monthly premium. You may also be eligible for premium-free Part A if you or your spouse worked and paid Medicare taxes for at least 10 years.
In addition to Part A and Part B, there are also Medicare Advantage plans and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. Medicare Advantage plans are private health insurance plans that provide all of your Medicare Part A and Part B benefits, as well as some additional benefits, such as dental, vision, and hearing coverage. Medicare Part D prescription drug plans help you pay for prescription drugs.
How to choose Medicare coverage
There are many different factors to consider when choosing Medicare coverage, such as your health needs, your budget, and the doctors and hospitals you want to use.
If you have a chronic health condition, you may want to consider a Medicare Advantage plan that offers specialized care for your condition. Medicare Advantage plans also tend to have lower out-of-pocket costs than Medigap plans, so they may be a better option if you have a high deductible or coinsurance.
If you want to have more flexibility in choosing your doctors and hospitals, you may want to consider a Medigap plan. Medigap plans also allow you to keep your Medicare Part D prescription drug coverage, while Medicare Advantage plans may require you to switch to a different prescription drug plan.
No matter which option you choose, make sure to compare the costs and benefits carefully before deciding.
Here are some additional things to keep in mind when choosing Medicare coverage:
- You can change your Medicare coverage during the Annual Enrollment Period (AEP), which runs from October 15 to December 7 each year.
- You can also make changes to your Medicare coverage during a Special Enrollment Period (SEP), which is a time when you can make changes to your coverage outside of the AEP.
- There are also some Medicare plans that have a guaranteed issue, which means that you can enroll in the plan even if you have a pre-existing condition.
