What Isn’t Covered by Original Medicare?

Original Medicare does not cover all of the health care services that older people are likely to need in retirement. Here are some of the most common services that are not covered by Original Medicare:

  • Eyeglasses and contact lenses: Original Medicare does not cover the cost of eyeglasses or contact lenses, or the routine eye exams that are needed to prescribe corrective lenses.
  • Dental care: Original Medicare does not cover the cost of dental care, such as cleanings, fillings, and crowns.
  • Hearing aids: Original Medicare does not cover the cost of hearing aids.
  • Long-term care: Original Medicare does not cover the cost of long-term care, such as nursing home care or assisted living.

When Should You Enroll in Original Medicare?

You can first enroll in Original Medicare during a seven-month window that begins three months before the month you turn 65. This is called the “Medicare Initial Enrollment Period.” If you enroll during this period, your coverage will begin the month you turn 65.

It is important to enroll in Original Medicare during your Initial Enrollment Period, even if you do not think you will need it right away. This is because you will not be able to enroll in Original Medicare without paying a penalty if you wait until after your Initial Enrollment Period.

Are You Eligible for Medicare?

You are eligible for Medicare if you are:

  • 65 years old or older
  • A citizen or permanent resident of the United States
  • Worked for at least 10 years in Medicare-covered employment

If you are not 65 years old, you might also be eligible for Medicare if you have a disability or End-Stage Renal Disease (permanent kidney failure requiring dialysis or transplant).

How Do You Pay for Original Medicare?

There are two parts to Original Medicare: Part A and Part B.

  • Part A: Part A covers inpatient care, such as hospital stays and skilled nursing facility stays. Part A is premium-free for most people, but you may have to pay a deductible and coinsurance.
  • Part B: Part B covers outpatient care, such as doctor’s visits and preventive services. You must pay a monthly premium for Part B.

You can also choose to buy a Medigap policy, which can help pay for some of the out-of-pocket costs of Original Medicare.
